Taking stock as a childbirth educator

This weekend I am in Doncaster in the midlands area of the England. It is a Teaching Skills workshop, with an interesting mix of National Childbirth Trust educators and midwives who work in the NHS. This kind of variety amongst the participants is always very stimulating for everyone and really adds to the enjoyment and usefulness of the program.

Working in this field can have its frustrations. There is never enough time for our programs, for a start, and the idea that parents can be fully prepared for birth and parenting in perhaps 12 hours is patently ridiculous. Yet, that’s what we try to do.... and it can be stressful. I’ve written several articles on these issues, and made some suggestions about how it can be handled.

Evaluation is very important to obtain feedback on what you are doing and shape changes and improvements. There is also a need to take care of yourself as an educator, to avoid burnout and unnecessary stress. I always recommend that we reassess our work on an annual basis to keep the program fresh and provide new challenges to prevent boredom. We also need to keep an eye on the bigger picture of the maternity services as well, as we plan appropriate programs that reflect the changes going on in service provision.
